Brazoria Community Historical Museum
Brazoria
Community Historical Museum is currently housed in a room of
the Brazoria Community Library at 620 S. Brooks with a large photo
history of Brazoria by Doris Setzer spilling over into the library
itself. With the acquisition of the 1933 BRAZORIA
PUBLIC SCHOOL BUILDING, plans are being made to relocate and
greatly expand the museum. Historical Tours may be arranged by
contacting Dr. Schwebel-979-798-9150 or the Chamber of Commerce at
979-798-6100.
Current
exhibits include:
A
recreation of a portion of Dr. Sofie Herzog's office as portrayed in a
c. 1908 photo. The colorful lady surgeon who set up a
practice in Brazoria in February of 1895 or 1896 is thought to
have been the first woman surgeon in Texas; and, upon her appointment
as Chief Surgeon for the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railroad in
1907 newspapers all over the nation proclaimed her the first
woman surgeon for a major railroad in the world. Eclectic in
both methods of practice and lifestyle, Dr. Sofie's furnished her
office with animal heads, snake skins, beautiful bric-a-brac,
lace (much of it made by the doctor herself) and various collections
including walking canes from around the world and jars of medical
oddities. She also collected the bullets removed from her
patients and had those from her most interesting cases made into a
necklace. At her request, she was buried in her bullet
necklace, but a bust of the doctor wearing a facsimile of the necklace
is on display. Dr. Sofie received her early training in
Vienna. A program on the doctor featuring a monologue by
Dortha Riggs Pekar as Dr. Sofie is available by calling Pekar at
979-345-3719. The program is free if presented in the
museum.
A large collection of knives taken from prisoners in the various
correctional facilities located in Brazoria County is a favorite
exhibit. Many of the knives are fashioned from everyday
materials and exhibit a great deal of creativity. The
collection from the estate of Harold Graves includes the infamous
"Lucky Strike Machete" which was used to decapitate.............
The
"Women's Work" exhibit includes a selection of clothing and textiles,
spinning wheels, irons, needle work, sewing machine and needle working
supplies and tools.
There
is a selection of artifacts found at the site of Jane Long's tavern; a
display of items from Jefferson Lake Sulfur Company; a selection of
cash registers, ledgers and other information from early merchants in
the area. The museum also houses a model oil
derrick, early telephone switch equipment, sandstone from the 1896 (?)
Brazoria courthouse, a large group old of
bottles, many found locally (some included in the Dr, Sofie
exhibit), old medical books and many other items of local
historical interest. There is an exhibit honoring
local cowboys in its beginning stages. Doc Stanger, Cowboy
Hall of Fame honoree, will be the focus of the exhibit which will also
feature many local cowboys/ranchers and the history of ranching in the
area. This exhibit, though small now, will be greatly
expanded when we move to our new facilities in the 1933 school building.
Reference
materials are available for use in the museum and books about area and
Texas history are for sale there.
